The Largest eFuel Hub in the Baltic Sea Region
Oulu is emerging as the largest synthetic fuel hub in the Baltic Sea region, driven by abundant renewable electricity, competitive power prices, and strong industrial momentum. The region combines large-scale green hydrogen production with significant biogenic CO₂ availability, enabling the production of sustainable aviation fuels and other e-fuels at scale.
This development is underpinned by multiple hydrogen and eFuel projects led by Oulun Energia, P2X Solutions, Verso Energy, Hy2Gen, ABO Energy and Energiequelle, representing a combined hydrogen capacity of over 2 GW currently under development. Extensive district heating and clean water resources further strengthen the region’s integration of energy and industrial systems.
Planned hydrogen transport infrastructure by Gasgrid Finland, including the Nordic Hydrogen Route, will connect Oulu’s production capacity to national and European markets. Supported by strong R&D capabilities at the University of Oulu, a skilled talent base, and excellent logistics via port, rail, road and air connections, Oulu is positioned as a key node in Northern Europe’s future hydrogen and eFuel economy.
